Character name: Guillaume Gerard
Series: The Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy
Character history: There is no wiki for this! When Gerard was a younger man, about 18ish or so, he was an etheric theory (SORCERER'S APPRENTICE) student at the prestigious university Lodun, located near the capital city Vienne, seat of the Ile-Rien monarchy (think vaguely London, England). As a young student having no money but a considerable talent for his craft, Gerard resorted to using his magic for confidence games to con people out of their money to pay his tuition. One day he was caught in the act by one Renyard Morane, then a soldier for the Queen’s Guard, who then, instead of turning him in, took him a man named Nicholas Valiarde (best understood as a mix of Batman and an old-style mafia don boss) who offered to pay for his tuition if Gerard worked for him. Gerard agreed, of course, and thus began a long career of working for the nigh-infamous Valiarde.

But That was many years ago. When the series opens we find out that Nicholas has died, and left Gerard as Executor of his estate and guardian over his daughter, Tremaine. Vienne has all but fallen to foreign attack by the Gardier, and the handful of viable Rienish sorcerers left (including, of course, Gerard) work for the Viller Institute, a side-project created by Nicholas to research and create powerful magic-facilitating devices called spheres. Having little to no success and quite a few casualties, Gerard finally contacts Tremaine to get a hold of the last sphere left, the Damal Prototype, and after discovering the Damal Prototype is more powerful than anyone bargained for, Shenanigans Happen

and continue to happen

across the rest of the three books of the series. I won’t get into details, but it involves a lot of world-gating hither and thither and fighting Gardier and sarcasm and Gerard being the only person in the party who can handle his emotions like a mature adult. I also won’t get into the ending, but things work out more or less. I am taking Gerard from about 3 or so months after the end of the last book, so he will be pretty chill.

Character personality: As previously stated, Gerard functioned as more or less the only party member who could handle his feelings like a mature adult that he was. Although he describes himself as being ‘unscrupulous’ in the past, he certainly passes as a sensible and proper gentleman now. ‘Passes’, because there are still moments where Gerard reveals his moral gray areas. He does not show much grief at having to kill people, as a fact of life; it was entirely likely Nicholas recruited him in the first place because Gerard showed the same morality he had: the ability to do morally questionable things in service of a cause, while avoiding excessive or wanton cruelty. Gerard shows himself as more than capable of rolling with any situation, dangerous or not, and he is a man very dedicated to the task at hand, whatever that task may be.

Gerard is also extremely dedicated to his companions and he is not particularly reserved in showing that he cares for and worries about them. Unlike Tremaine and Nicholas, who basically want to murder their feelings with knives, Gerard does not have any such hangups, though he does tend to be on the calmer side in any situation, and is rarely given to strong emotions except perhaps STRONG exasperation at Nicholas or Tremaine being dissembling basket cases. Gerard has no small penchant for sarcasm himself, though he has to given the company he keeps likes to communicate almost exclusively in it.

All in all, Gerard is a pretty sensible, middle-aged dude who is too busy getting shit done to indulge in interpersonal drama; he is comfortable with himself, his feelings, and his morality. he is also absolutely a dude you would want next to you in a fight, quick-thinking, competent, and inured by years of being in war-time and doing shady underground things for Nicholas to operating under pressure.

Journal entry sample:

Hello? Oh, why am I even--I don’t even know how to tell if this is working correctly.

But yes, hello. My name is Gerard, and I’ve just arrived. I’m getting a little too old for incredulity at this point--and I thought, too old to be world-hopping around again, I’ve had enough of that in the last year, thank you--so if someone could offer me directions to somewhere where I could get a glass of wine, or maybe a cup of coffee, or perhaps both in rapid succession with one another, I would be grateful.

Log/prose based sample:

Gerard sighed.

There was an urge to rub his temple that he valiantly fought down with an ironic snort. No need to get hysterical, he thought to himself, dryly. This is what being around Nicholas again for the past few months had done to him; here he was faced with an entirely new problem in a new place with, from what he could tell, no more magic, and all he could manage was to be mildly put out.

The lack of magic was going to be... a problem, he supposed. He knew it had to be something about this place blocking his ability to perform spells. He may have had three months left in his convalescence before the doctor cleared him to so much read a book about etheric theory, but it was really just precautionary measure, and anyway, he’d had already been back to helping Nicholas straighten Vienne out from the underground up. So he knew there was nothing wrong with him.

He did allow himself to lean against the nearby wall a little while he ran his fingers curiously over the new device in his hands. If it could indeed perform all the things the people had told him, it was certainly an intriguing little device. Quite unconsciously, he found himself already absorbed in playing with it, and it wasn’t long before he thought he had the hang of it enough to try it out.
